Thank you for your interest in Shumate Brokerage Corp. Our agency was one of the true pioneers in life insurance product brokerage. Our founder, Victor W. Shumate, CLU, moved his family to Tampa in February of 1957 with the old Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company.

In the late 60's he was approached by one of the first pure brokerage carriers, Guardsman Life and began to shift his efforts totally into brokerage by becoming a General Agent for the Guardsman. As time passed, he added other carriers such as First Colony Life Insurance Company and the old Life Insurance Company of Virginia, both in 1980. We are proud to have had a 25 year relationship with these outstanding companies. We have taken on carriers as necessary keeping an eye on their ratings and the type of market they were trying to attract. Sometimes it meant passing up the hot company or product of the moment, but we have never regretted that. Our philosophy is one that strives for quality.

In the fall of 1974, V. Brent Shumate entered the insurance business after graduating from the Virginia Military Institute and active duty. After three years in personal production he was hired as a home office regional director and recruited agents throughout the seven southeastern states. In 1980 he joined his father at Shumate Brokerage. Mr. Victor Shumate, CLU, retired from active participation in the business fourteen years ago. Mr. V. Brent Shumate has served as the President of the Tampa Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, state president of the Florida Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, and State National Committeeman for the Florida Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. He has received the FAIFA C.J. Snead ~ J.F. Bryant III Memorial Award, "for advancing the cause of life insurance in the finest traditions of the industry," the TALU Life Underwriter of the Year Award, and the FAIFA President's Award for his chairmanship and direction in the creation of the FAIFA Long Range Plan.
